I Pterois hanno una testa relativamente piccola, la bocca grande, occhi sporgenti, al di sopra dei quali si notano due escrescenze. Il loro corpo si restringe verso il peduncolo caudale che precede una coda piuttosto larga, tondeggiante. Come noto, i primi raggi della pinna dorsale e di quella anale sono aculei veleniferi, che vengono eretti dal pesce quando in situazione di pericolo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Questi aculei sono cavi e collegati a una ghiandola velenifera. I raggi delle pinne pettorali sono invece degli aculei pieni non velenosi. La livrea dello Pterois differisce a seconda delle specie ma \u00e8 tendenzialmente bruno-rossastra e bianca. Queste specie sono soprattutto diffuse nelle aree tropicali dell&#8217;<a title=\"Indo-Pacifico\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indo-Pacifico\">Indo-Pacifico<\/a>&nbsp;ma si stanno diffondendo, a scapito di altre specie, anche in tutti i Caraibi e la costa orientale del Nord America fino a sud in Venezuela e Colombia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5945\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ocean4future.org\/savetheocean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/sealion-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"sealion 1\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ocean4future.org\/savetheocean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/sealion-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ocean4future.org\/savetheocean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/sealion-1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>L&#8217;articolo di <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Alexandra Santos<\/span><\/strong>, originaria della Repubblica Dominicana, ci racconta questo aspetto ecologico, non a tutti noto, che ha portato le Autorit\u00e0 dei Caraibi ad autorizzarne la pesca per cercare di arginarne la riproduzione. La specie \u00e8 cresciuta cos\u00ec rapidamente nel corso degli ultimi venti anni &nbsp;da occupare in maniera invasiva le scogliere atlantiche temperate e tropicali. Nativa dell&#8217;Indo-Pacifico, \u00e8 arrivata nell&#8217;Oceano Atlantico a causa del rilascio, accidentale o colpevole, in mare di alcuni esemplari. Questo atto ha portato alla distruzione di molte specie native divorate dal nuovo arrivato. Ma cosa rende questi bellissimi pesci cos\u00ec dannosi? Direi la sua aggressivit\u00e0 favorita dal fatto di non avere di fatto predatori e di essere in grado di rilasciare fino a 300 milioni di uova all&#8217;anno che non sono mangiate dagli altri pesci a causa di un deterrente chimico che le protegge.<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5944\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ocean4future.org\/savetheocean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/sea-lion-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"sea lion 2\" width=\"327\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ocean4future.org\/savetheocean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/sea-lion-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.ocean4future.org\/savetheocean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/sea-lion-2.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/>La loro aggressivit\u00e0 li porta a nutrirsi voracemente di&nbsp; diversi tipi di pesci, invertebrati e molluschi. Per avere un idea, un piccolo pesce leone pu\u00f2 ridurre il numero di pesci nativi del 80% in meno di un mese. Il veleno dei suoi aculei pu\u00f2 essere molto doloroso per l&#8217;uomo ma non \u00e8 fatale. Ironia della sorte, \u00e8 l&#8217;Uomo l&#8217;unico suo predatore. Researchers believe they arrived here with the help of people releasing unwanted pets into the Atlantic Ocean, not knowing that one day these fish would become the first venomous marine fish invasive to this region. Marine Invaders are a near impossible to eradicate once established, so these little guys are here to stay. &nbsp;These fish can be found in waters as cold as 50 degrees Fahrenheit and as deep as 1000 feet down. What makes these fish so bad you might ask? &nbsp;Not only does nothing in the Atlantic naturally prey on these fish, they can reproduce up to 300 million eggs per year. Other fish do not feed on the eggs due to a chemical deterrent produced in the egg sack.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5946 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ocean4future.org\/savetheocean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/sealion-3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"sealion 3\" width=\"580\" height=\"775\">These fish are sexually mature by the age of one years old. <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pterois are aggressive feeders known to feed on up to 70 different fish, invertebrates and mollusks.<\/span> <\/strong>Just one small lion fish alone can reduce the number of native juvenile Atlantic fish on one a single reef by 80% in as little as one month! The venom in the spines can be very painful to humans however the venom is not fatal. Soft white flakey meat makes these fish a very nice dinner choice. Of course you have to catch them first! Join in on the nationwide hunt for lion fish and help control the population on these invading creatures.
