In quest\u2019area \u00e8 abbastanza facile incontrare cinque specie di cetacei: la<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b> balenottera comune (Balaenoptera physalus), il capodoglio (Physeter macrocephalus), il tursiope (Tursiops truncatus), la stenella striata (Stenella coeruleoalba) e il grampo (Grampus griseus)<\/b><span style=\"color: #008000;\">. <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pi\u00f9 rari ma comunque osservabili sono lo<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">zifio (Ziphius cavirostris), il globicefalo (Globicephala melas), la pseudorca (Pseudorca crassidensis) e il delfino comune (Delphinus delphis)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La presenza di mammiferi marini, organismi all\u2019apice della catena alimentare, dimostra che questa porzione di Mediterraneo gode di un\u2019elevata ricchezza. Un\u2019alta produzione di fito e zooplancton permette lo sviluppo di complesse reti alimentari pelagiche che mantengono abbondanti popolazioni di predatori. Il plancton comprende organismi di tutti i gruppi vegetali e animali, dalle forme pi\u00f9 incredibili, con dimensioni variabili da microscopiche ad alcuni metri di lunghezza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I subacquei e i seawatcher riescono ad osservare solo le forme pi\u00f9 grandi, principalmente di consistenza gelatinosa: <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">ctenofori, sifonofori, taliacei<\/span><\/strong> e, soprattutto, <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">meduse<\/span><\/strong>. Periodicamente, proliferazioni cicliche portano allo sviluppo di dense popolazioni delle grandi ed eleganti<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"> Rizostomee (Rhizostoma pulmo, Cothyloriza tubercolata)<\/span><\/strong> che giungono in prossimit\u00e0 delle coste normalmente scortate da piccoli pesci pelagici del genere <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Trachurus<\/span><\/strong>, oppure delle piccole e maggiormente insidiose pelage (<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pelagia noctiluca<\/span><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ocean4future.org\/savetheocean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/BIOLOGIA-MARINA-MEDUSA640px-Rhizostoma_pulmo_0128.jpg\" alt=\"Questa immagine ha l'attributo alt vuoto; il nome del file \u00e8 BIOLOGIA-MARINA-MEDUSA640px-Rhizostoma_pulmo_0128.jpg\" width=\"933\" height=\"700\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Rhizostoma pulmo \u00e8 una specie pelagica diffusa nell&#8217;oceano Atlantico orientale, nel Mar Mediterraneo (frequente lungo tutta la costa adriatica e costa ionica, particolarmente nei periodi tardo-estivi ed inizio-autunnali) e nel Mar Nero &#8211; autore Tato Grasso, scattata a Favignana, Sicilia<\/span><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Rhizostoma_pulmo_0128.jpg\">Rhizostoma pulmo 0128.jpg &#8211; Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recentemente nei mari toscani \u00e8 divenuta abbastanza comune anche la <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Caribdea marsupialis<\/span><\/strong>, una cubomedusa, parente prossima delle pericolose vespe di mare australiane. Sebbene non tossico come nelle specie tropicali (come la <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Chironex fleckeri<\/span><\/strong>), il veleno di questa specie pu\u00f2 provocare ustioni per contatto e, in caso di allergie dell&#8217;infortunato, essere anche mortale. Nel caso sfortunato di un contatto occasionale <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">vanno rimossi i tentacoli al pi\u00f9 presto ed<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">esporre la parte colpita a forti sorgenti di calore (sabbia bollente o acqua bollente) essendo il veleno termolabile<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Particolarmente curiose sono le velelle (<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Velella velell<\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">a<\/span><\/strong>) comunemente chiamate barchette di San Pietro o di San Giovanni. Sono meduse coloniali, ovvero costituite da pi\u00f9 individui, che galleggiano in superficie sospinte dal vento grazie ad una piccola espansione dell\u2019ombrella simile ad una piccola vela. Come gli altri cnidari (celenterati), la <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Velella velella<\/span><\/strong> \u00e8 un animale carnivoro. Cattura la sua preda, generalmente plancton, tramite i tentacoli che contengono delle tossine. Queste tossine, pur essendo efficaci contro le preda, sono innocue per gli esseri umani, ma \u00e8 comunque preferibile evitare di toccarsi gli occhi dopo averle toccate. L\u2019animale pelagico pi\u00f9 incredibile \u00e8 per\u00f2 l\u2019<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>argonauta (Argonauta argo)<\/b><span style=\"color: #008000;\">. <\/span><\/span>La femmina di questo piccolo polpo pu\u00f2 essere incontrata, seppur raramente, in prossimit\u00e0 della superficie mentre si trascina dietro un\u2019elegante conchiglia da lei costruita e nella quale depone le uova. <span style=\"color: #005000;\">I<\/span>l maschio \u00e8 piccolissimo e dispone di un lungo braccio <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">ectocotile<\/span><\/strong> (il braccio deputato alla \u2026 riproduzione in tutti i cefalopodi) che si stacca per fecondare la femmina. Le piccole isole toscane e sarde, le falesie della Corsica e della Sardegna rappresentano zone particolarmente favorevoli per l\u2019incontro con pesci pelagici che, in periodi diversi dell\u2019anno a seconda delle specie, si avvicinano alle scogliere meno frequentate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In primavera \u00e8 possibile incontrare i <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">pesci luna<\/span><\/strong>, in estate <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">palamite o ricciole<\/span><\/strong>, in autunno <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">lecce, lampughe<\/span><\/strong> (<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Coryphaena hippurus<\/span><\/strong>) e <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">pesci serra (Pomatomus saltator)<\/span><\/strong>. Sempre pi\u00f9 stanziali stanno invece divenendo i barracuda, che ormai stazionano durante tutto l\u2019anno attorno alle secche e alle piccole isole. Il pesce pelagico per eccellenza \u00e8 per\u00f2 il <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">tonno (Thunnus thynnus)<\/span><\/strong>, la cui grazia e maestosit\u00e0 non pu\u00f2 lasciare insensibili i subacquei che hanno la fortuna di trovarselo faccia a faccia, anche se normalmente per non pi\u00f9 di qualche secondo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Da non trascurare la presenza nelle acque del <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Santuario dei Cetacei<\/span> <span style=\"color: #008000;\">delle tartarughe marine<\/span><\/strong>: questi rettili, anche se non si riproducono in quest\u2019area del Mediterraneo, vi rappresentano ospiti abituali.
