The seas are eerily calm, and we can see<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>the surface of the ocean peppered with plastic. We saw the same thing exactly 5 years ago when we began the <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">5 Gyres Expeditions<\/span> <\/strong>around the world.&nbsp;Now, 50,000 miles later, we\u2019re back where we started and the science and solutions are even more clear.&nbsp;The science tells us that plastic objects in the ocean drift to the subtropical gyres, shred to microplastics, and sink to deeper currents and the seafloor worldwide &#8211;&nbsp;it&#8217;s&nbsp;most akin to a <em>plastic smog,<\/em>&nbsp;like the smog that plagues big cities, swirls with atmospheric currents, and&nbsp;slowly settles&nbsp;closer to the us.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5522e85be4b0b65a7c78ac96\/t\/55822a80e4b0d19cec8553c7\/1434594389215\/?format=500w\" alt=\"Labeling microplastics on our&nbsp;Sea Change Expedition\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Labeling microplastics on our&nbsp;Sea Change Expedition<\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp; Microplastic is&nbsp;the same thing. People could look up at smog in the air and say, \u201cWe can only clean that up by stopping the pollution in the first place,\u201d so companies made better car mufflers and scrubbers on smoke stacks at power plants.&nbsp;They controlled emissions and it worked beautifully. Those<strong> people who suggested using butterfly nets to scoop air pollution out of the sky, or vacuum cleaners on top of skyscrapers, were sent to the loony bin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5522e85be4b0b65a7c78ac96\/t\/55822b23e4b035e73122d477\/1434594085259\/?format=500w\" alt=\"One of the misguided plastic recovery gizmos\" width=\"266\" height=\"201\">As recent as 5 years ago the world still believed media-sensationalized images of mythical islands of trash or static garbage patches of plastic in the ocean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But you can\u2019t look out to the ocean&nbsp;and see the reality of the problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5522e85be4b0b65a7c78ac96\/t\/55822b31e4b035e73122d4cd\/1434594918310\/?format=500w\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"192\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These myths spawned fanciful engineering solutions to go get it, like circular islands pulled by kites that scooped trash, or contraptions with 1km-wide booms that directed drifting plastic to a floating conveyor belt. These ideas, and their inventors, typically have no time at sea to test their ideas or themselves.&nbsp;On the contrary, it is safe to say that just about all marine scientists that have been to sea understand that a techno-fix to grab trash from the ocean is an unrealistic solution.&nbsp;Here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumb-image loaded\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5522e85be4b0b65a7c78ac96\/t\/55822acae4b0e4c2b153e2ba\/1434593996958\/?format=1000w\" alt=\"&nbsp;A mapping of the plastic smog pervading our oceans&nbsp;\" width=\"625\" height=\"434\" data-src=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5522e85be4b0b65a7c78ac96\/t\/55822acae4b0e4c2b153e2ba\/1434593996958\/\" data-image=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5522e85be4b0b65a7c78ac96\/t\/55822acae4b0e4c2b153e2ba\/1434593996958\/\" data-image-dimensions=\"1085x484\" data-image-focal-point=\"0.5,0.5\" data-load=\"false\" data-image-id=\"55822acae4b0e4c2b153e2ba\" data-type=\"image\" data-image-resolution=\"1000w\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">A mapping of the plastic smog pervading our oceans<\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1435151225837_379\" class=\"row sqs-row\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1435151225837_378\" class=\"col sqs-col-12 span-12\">\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1434584249853_202210\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1434584249853_202193\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There\u2019s plenty of by-catch that kills ocean life<\/strong>.&nbsp;When fishermen net the sea indiscriminantly, they catch and kill marine life they don\u2019t want.&nbsp; Most schemes to sieve the ocean for plastic will capture and kill marine life, especially big nets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ocean recovery is an attempt to capture plastic after it has already affected marine life&nbsp;<\/strong>rather than focusing on river mouths or further upstream where the ecological impacts can be minimized.<\/p>\n<p>3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Recovery methods&nbsp;do&nbsp;stop the flow of plastic<\/strong> from countries with poor waste management or microplastics from storm water or sewage effluent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4. &nbsp; &nbsp; <strong>Recovery schemes misdirect vital funds<\/strong>.&nbsp;Cleanup projects take the limited funding coming from good-hearted global citizens and directs it away from campaigns to drive upstream changes in product design and producer responsibility, which are the long-term solutions we need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>The ocean is resilient and will kick out plastic once new pollution stops<\/strong>. One great example is the rapid reduction in balls of tar drifting in the ocean soon after international law prohibited oil tankers from rinsing out the inside of their ships into the sea.&nbsp;The ocean kicked out the tar.
