Researchers offered\u00a0historical examples of the engineering approach, which tends to succeed \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">whenever objectives are clear and measurable and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #339966;\">we have some means to intervene fast enough<\/span><\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Sustainability, however, is defined as a &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966;\">wicked problem<\/span><\/span><\/strong>,&#8221; as are the related issues of economic growth and human development. Researchers explain how circular objectives, multi-dimensional causality, and evolving horizons place these issues beyond the scope of engineering because \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">the information necessary to solve society-wide issues is typically distributed across many different entities<\/span>,<\/strong>\u201d requiring \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">large-scale fluid coordination of many agents.<\/span><\/strong>\u201d <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">A multidisciplinary, combinatorial approaches from complex systems offer approaches better suited to the nature of sustainability. <\/span><\/strong>They describe how complex systems theory, combined with knowledge creation and engineered solutions, could respond to the growing needs of human societies on a finite earth.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">To think of engineering systems in increasingly adaptable ways and over the longer term\u2026 [is] the place where emerging complex systems theory and methods may be most helpful in creating transformative new integrated approaches for a more sustainable planet,\u201d they wrote.\u00a0&#8220;The problem of incorporating current and future human behavior into the design of technological systems is that social and technological systems appeal to very different models of the world and strategies for problem solving (Bettencourt <a class=\"referenceLink\" style=\"color: #008000;\" title=\"Link to bibliographic citation\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jiec.12243\/full#jiec12243-bib-0002\" rel=\"references:#jiec12243-bib-0002\" shape=\"rect\">2014<\/a><\/span><\/strong>)&#8221;.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Read the full \u00a0<a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jiec.12243\/full\">article<\/a> in the <em>Journal of Industrial Ecology<\/em> (March 11, 2015)<\/span><\/strong><br \/><br \/>Reference : Bettencourt, L.
